Otsuka America Pharmaceutical, Inc. (“OAPI”) is part of the Otsuka
Group (“Otsuka”).
Otsuka: A Diversified Global Group of
Companies
Otsuka is a diversified group of companies with many lines of
business that encompass pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, consumer
products, medical devices, hospital infusion and chemicals. Otsuka
includes 153 companies and 36,000 employees in 23 countries and
regions around the world. The Otsuka Group generated $9.7
B in net sales in 2008. Otsuka America Pharmaceutical, Inc. (OAPI) is a
small company that is part of the Otsuka group of companies. OAPI
was established in the US in 1989 and is responsible for all
pharmaceutical and medical device commercial activities in North
America.
OAPI Business Foundation, Vision and
Focus
OAPI has built a solid foundation on Otsuka-developed products and
will continue to build on this foundation to achieve its corporate
vision: A strong and highly competitive organization capable of
successfully launching our own products for better patient outcomes.
In 2009, OAPI is taking on greater responsibility for driving the
growth of ABILIFY®
(aripiprazole)1 in the US. We will maximize growth
within the psychiatric community by building a strong neuroscience
organization. OAPI is also focused on growing its oncology,
hospital, and medical device businesses.
Pioneering Science: Driving
unconventional thinking and action
Otsuka is committed to the “greater good” as demonstrated by the
investments made to develop compounds in therapeutic areas that may
not yield significant financial results. Examples include research
investments in tuberculosis, which affects millions of patients in
Africa and Asia, and the development of a compound for hyponatremia
and, potentially, for polycystic kidney disease (PKD). Both
hyponatremia and PKD have a small prevalence and might otherwise be
ignored. The history of Otsuka’s development activities demonstrates
its commitment to a long-term approach. Otsuka develops drugs and
treatments by understanding patients’ and doctors’ unmet medical
needs, and taking the time needed to explore the full potential of a
compound. ABILIFY®
(aripiprazole)1 was in development for 22 years prior to
commercialization and today is used by over 3 million patients.
OAPI Offers a Unique Culture
At OAPI, each employee’s ideas are welcomed and considered,
regardless of his or her role or level in the organization. OAPI
offers a pay for performance environment. Once onboard, Otsuka’s
principle of “jissho shugi” (demonstrating excellence to be
considered for greater responsibility) ensures people grow and are
rewarded. Consistent, candid and honest performance feedback coupled
with leadership development opportunities present each employee with
opportunities to meet their full potential. OAPI is committed to
developing, attracting and retaining top talent in the
pharmaceutical industry. We all share a common drive to make a
difference by working together to grow our business and promote
better health.
