Otsuka iscommitted to developing and launching products
for better patient outcomes
Otsuka Pharmaceutical Group
(Otsuka) develops drugs and treatments by understanding patients’ and
doctors’ unmet medical needs and taking the time to explore the full
potential of a compound. ABILIFY® (aripiprazole)1 was in
development 22 years prior to commercialization and today is used by
over 3 million patients.
Otsuka is committed to the “greater good” as demonstrated by the
investments made to develop compounds in therapeutic areas that may not
yield significant financial results. Examples include research
investments in tuberculosis, which affects millions of patients in
Africa and Asia, and the development of a compound for hyponatremia and
polycystic kidney disease (PKD). Both hyponatremia and PKD have a small
prevalence and might otherwise be ignored. The history of Otsuka’s
development activities demonstrates its commitment to a long-term
approach.
Otsuka is committed to
pioneering innovative treatments to serve a wide spectrum of therapeutic
areas. Otsuka is currently developing new treatments and indications
focusing on neuroscience, oncology, hospital and medical device areas
for diseases with significant unmet medical need. By allocating
significant resources in these treatment areas Otsuka will maintain its
commitment to develop and launch products for better patient outcomes.
Otsuka America Pharmaceutical,
Inc. draws from a number of different sources for our healthcare
products in development. The company currently has three general sources
for new products:
Otsuka Pharmaceutical
Co., Ltd. (OPC) is one of the largest healthcare companies in Japan.
OPC has 44 research institutes worldwide which conduct most of the
company's basic research, product development, and toxicology
research and development studies. In addition to the OPC research
institutes, the Otsuka Pharmaceutical Group owns a number of other
businesses engaged in healthcare product development.
Otsuka Pharmaceutical
Development & Commercialization, Inc. (OPDC) is dedicated to
research, product development, and clinical development. The
professionals at OPDC were invaluable contributors to the
development of ABILIFY® (aripiprazole) Tablets,
PLETAL® (cilostazol) Tablets2 and
SAMSCATM
(tolvaptan)3 and are currently pursuing the clinical
development of other Otsuka products.
OAPI seeks out products
from reputable businesses outside the Otsuka Pharmaceutical Group
for development and commercialization.
