Junichi Kambayashi, MD, PhD joined Otsuka America Pharmaceutical, Inc. (OAPI) in 1996 as a Consultant and Senior Director, supervising basic research at Maryland Research Laboratories and contributing to the clinical development programs.
In 1997, Dr. Kambayashi was promoted to Vice President of Applied Research and was elected to the Board of Directors in 1998 before being promoted to Executive Vice President in 1999, where he was responsible for cardiovascular preclinical and clinical areas. In January 2001, Dr. Kambayashi was appointed as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Otsuka Maryland Research Institute, Inc. (OMRI), when a strategic decision was made to separate the commercial activities in Otsuka's U.S. pharmaceutical business from its research and development activities.
In August 2003, when the Otsuka Maryland Medicinal Laboratories, LLC (OMML) was established as a wholly-owned subsidiary of OMRI, Dr. Kambayashi was appointed Chairman and CEO of OMML. In January 2007, OMML became a separate, incorporated entity - Otsuka Maryland Medicinal Laboratories, Inc.
Dr. Kambayashi was born in Japan and studied to become a physician/scientist at the Osaka University Medical School, where he served as a Chief Vascular Surgeon prior to joining Otsuka. Dr. Kambayashi is board certified to both practice and teach in the areas of surgery and hematology. In the 1970's, he obtained postgraduate training in surgery and research experience in hematology at U.S. institutions.
Dr. Kambayashi's expertise spans many therapeutic categories, including vascular surgery, general surgery, hematology, haemostasis and thrombosis, platelet biochemistry, vascular biology, and biomaterials.
Dr. Kambayashi holds several editorial appointments and memberships in international academic societies, and his work continues to be published in numerous international medical journals.
