At Otsuka, providing innovative products and solutions is just one part of how we want to holistically approach healthcare needs. We believe it is vital to give patients, their families and caregivers access to information to help them understand more about the diseases they are dealing with through a series of unbranded online educational resources.

Otsuka Patient Education Network

Otsuka-people are always coming up with fresh, innovative ideas. One such idea was to create an online educational resource across all of Otsuka’s therapeutic areas for patients, their families and caregivers. It began when an Otsuka employee was struggling to find information related to an illness when she was caring for a loved one. She didn’t want anyone else to have to suffer such a lonely and frustrating ordeal. In keeping with the Otsuka culture of collaboration, teams from Otsuka America Pharmaceutical, Inc. and Otsuka Pharmaceutical Development & Commercialization, Inc. brainstormed her idea for better education for patients. They persevered with the research and development needed to turn the dream into a reality. Two years later, the Otsuka Patient Education Network (OPEN) was born.
The first OPEN offering is the More Than My Diagnosis website ( It features educational resources that include many videos where people living with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or depression talk about their mental health issues and the challenges they face. Topics discussed include diagnosis, wellness, relationships and the workplace. The aim is to help people cope with, manage and understand their disease, through hearing the perspective of those who already live with it. There are plans to add additional awareness and education videos and resources to the More Than My Diagnosis sites, featuring a range of diseases.
"OPEN was designed so patients and caregivers had access to unbranded educational resources. We wanted patients to know, that at Otsuka, patients mean more to us than just a diagnosis".

Living With Alzheimer's Webisodes

Webisodes (a series of videos for use online) are a recent Otsuka initiative to provide patients with valuable education resources. We have already produced unbranded ‘Living with Alzheimer’s’ webisodes for the Alzheimer’s Disease International website. The four episode series features: spotting the signs of dementia;  seeing the doctors; life after diagnosis; getting support.  Similar webisode series are currently being developed as an educational resource for Pseudobulbar Affect and mental health.
